Frommer's Review
Since it's closed for top-to-toe renovation until September 2006,
we're including the Shelbourne in case you're planning to come to Dublin
after it reopens. This is one of two Dublin hotels that mean more to the
city than just a place to stay. Like the Northside's Gresham, to
Dubliners the Shelbourne symbolizes history and politics, and nothing --
not even getting swallowed up by the Meridien Group -- can change that.
Founded in 1824, it has played a significant role in Irish history --
the Irish constitution was drafted here in 1922, in room 112 -- and it
still attracts Irish politicians, especially to its bars and
restaurants. Before the renovation, the bars, lobby, and tearooms were
warmed by fireplaces and lighted by Waterford chandeliers, and we hope
that will remain the same. Once it reopens, we'll revisit it and report
back.
